I saw people promoting this Bixi System (bicycle + taxi?) in Tompkins Square Park this weekend. I think it’s great to have more bikes in NYC, but I didn’t see any helmets. Can we really trust people that don’t normally bike to ride around a heavily-trafficked city like NY without any head protection? Although biking accidents have fallen dramatically in the last decade, I worry about newbie bikers on the roads. People in Montreal, where Bixi has been up and running as of May, feel the same way. I think Bixi should have a bike helmet attached to every bicycle. The fact that it comes with the bike increases the chances that riders will actually wear it. More helmeted bikers = safer city.
